Description

Prior to the completion of this project, the Alaska State Parks Eklutna Lake All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) trailhead located near Anchorage, was a relatively small gravel parking area with minimal amenities. The trailhead was routinely inundated with users, especially in the spring and fall with hunters and their vehicles. The original parking area was designed to accommodate approximately 30 trucks with trailers, however capacity would often be slightly higher through creative parking which created problems such as blocked access and greatly reduced maneuvering space. On busy days, State Parks staff would direct traffic to maximize parking accommodation.

Purpose

The objective of this project was to expand parking capacity at the Eklutna Lake ATV trailhead by constructing an upper parking lot to accommodate additional truck and trailer users.

Outcome

The project was completed and open to the public in June 2024. The ATV trailhead parking area was expanded to nearly double the available truck and trailer parking.
