Forest Road Improvements — Mat-Su Valley

Description
The Mat-Su Valley Forest serves as a popular hunting area for grouse, moose and bear. Many recreationists also use this area for hiking, skiing, and ATV and snow machine riding. The network of roads within are used to manage timber stands to promote early successional forests and enhance habitat for wildlife dependent on these young hardwood stands.
Serving as the primary access corridors for the area, the Forest Service road networks have become increasingly popular for hunters over the years. This added use has expedited the deterioration of the road system, hindering hunting, wildland firefighting, and public forest use in general. To better meet the needs of all user groups, this project seeks to repair and harden 4.2 miles of road surface.
