Description
Located near Sitka, the Starrigavan Valley Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trail system provides the only road accessible trails in Sitka and are used for hunting year around. These trails provide access to blacktail deer, bear, and mountain goat populations in alpine areas and the surrounding valley. In 2014 a large rainfall event triggered landslides in the Starrigavan watershed. The largest landslide destroyed approximately 2,000 feet of anadromous salmon stream, riparian forest, wetland habitat, and blocked access to the upper valley's trail system. A 65-foot OHV log bridge was destroyed and diverted stream flow onto the trail. This diverted flow turned a portion of the trail system into a new stream channel, eroded the surface and destroyed three fish passage culverts.
Purpose
The primary purpose of this project is to repair and restore the aquatic and recreational resources impacted by the landslide. The OHV trail will be reconstructed and two new bridges along with fish friendly culverts installed to reconnect the trail system at the head of the valley. Other recreational enhancements will include expanding the OHV trailhead parking area and add an earthen berm OHV ramp, kiosk, and signs.
