Treadwell Ditch Trail — Tongass National Forest
Coordinates: 58.28594, -134.42739
Game Management Unit: 1C (Douglas Island)
Land Manager: United States Forest Service (USFS)
Description
Located on Douglas Island near Juneau, the Treadwell Ditch Trail connects the town of Douglas to the Eaglecrest Ski Area and provides non-motorized access to the rainforest backcountry. The trail crosses through state and federal lands, including the Tongass National Forest. This trail is the longest backcountry trail in the Juneau area and sees frequent use by hunters, trappers, runners, hikers, and even skiers when snow conditions allow. Harvest opportunities on Douglas Island include black bear, deer, wolf, and grouse.
Purpose
Traveling through Alaska's southeast rainforests can be difficult and dangerous at times, even for the experienced. Exceedingly limited sightlines hide landmarks and impact navigation, while dense foliage hides obstacles and hazards on the forest floor. Anyone who has ventured off-trail in these conditions can attest to the importance of an established trail with regards to safety and enjoyment.
While the Treadwell Ditch Trail is an established trail, sections of it have deteriorated with time due to the vulnerable soil conditions and heavy foot traffic. This project seeks to provide safe access to public land for hunters, trappers, and other recreation groups in Juneau and surrounding communities through the repair of trail segments, the installation of bridges, and the establishment of a durable trail surface.
