Sheep ID booklet
Attention sheep hunters and photographers! Do you have Dall sheep photos you are willing to share?
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is asking sheep hunters and photographers to donate a variety of Dall sheep photos taken in Alaska for an upcoming publication about how best to determine a legal sheep.
The publication will be similar in format to ADF&G’s Mountain Goat Identification Quiz, which is published as a booklet and also online at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=quiz.overview&quiz_id=3.
While the mountain goat quiz focuses on how to differentiate males from females, the sheep identification booklet and quiz will focus on how best to determine if a sheep is considered full curl or sub-legal.
The goal of the new publication is to help hunters obtain a better understanding of how to determine a legal sheep, said Tom Lohuis, an ADF&G research biologist who studies sheep.
The booklet’s authors are especially looking for photographs of full curl and sub-legal sheep taken from different angles. These angles might include head-on, sideways, from above, and below. Ideally, the same sheep might be photographed several times from different angles to illustrate how a sheep’s horns can appear differently from different perspectives.
Completion of the project is expected by spring 2012. Photos will be credited to the photographer; however, no payment is available for photographs.
