Situk River Sockeye Salmon Sport Fishery Limits Increased

(Yakutat) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced today that the bag and possession limits for sockeye salmon on the Situk River will be raised to 6 fish per day and 12 fish in possession effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024.

Sockeye Salmon (Situk River):

  • 6 fish per day/12 fish in possession

As of July 7, more than 33,000 sockeye salmon have been counted through the Situk River weir. The escapement goal for sockeye salmon on the Situk River is 30,000–70,000 fish. Typically, by this date, approximately 44% of the sockeye run has passed the Situk River weir. Based on run timing and current sockeye salmon passage at the weir, it is projected the sockeye salmon run will exceed the upper end of the escapement goal range. Increasing the sockeye salmon bag and possession limits will provide additional harvest opportunity for sport anglers and the escapement goal will still be achieved even with additional harvest from liberalizing the sport fish bag and possession limit.
