Olds River and Salonie Creek Close to Sport Fishing Upstream of Markers

(Kodiak) – To attempt to achieve broodstock collection goals and ensuring king salmon fishing opportunities in the future, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is closing sport fishing upstream of the markers located approximately 1 river mile upstream of the Chiniak Highway on the Olds River and Salonie Creek effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 11 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, August 2, 2024. This closure prohibits all sport fishing upstream of the markers, including catch-and-release in an attempt to meet broodstock collection goals and meet stocking goals for king salmon on the Kodiak Road System.

“Since 2016, king salmon broodstock goals have not been achieved for road system king salmon egg-takes and these areas have traditionally supported the bulk of king salmon broodstock that has been collected for Kodiak Road System king salmon stocking projects.,” stated Area Management Biologist Tyler Polum. “Closing these areas to sport fishing for the last half of July will allow more fish to be available for broodstock collection and allow for easier broodstock collection if the fish are not targeted by anglers. Anglers will still be able to target king salmon downstream of the markers as well as in the closed areas after August 2nd.”

Sport fishing opportunities may be restored in the closed areas by a subsequent emergency order if broodstock collection goals are achieved before the end of the closure period.
