Description: The Bear River weir is located about 25 km upstream of the river mouth, and about 100 m downstream of the outlet of Bear Lake, about 20 km east of Port Moller on the North Alaska Peninsula. The weir is a conventional wooden tripod and aluminum picket weir, about 50 m long, erected in water that averages about 1 m in depth. Bear Lake supports the largest run of sockeye salmon on the North Alaska Peninsula. In a typical year it is the driving force behind North Alaska Peninsula salmon fisheries. The sockeye salmon returning to bear lake are temporally separated into two distinct runs. The early run returns in late June and early July while the late run returns in early to mid-August. The early run is typically about twice the magnitude of the late run.
