Fish Culturist I, Tim Vangelderen, cleans a tank with Arctic grayling which have just left their incubators. The salmon viewing overlook located on Ship Creek. Fish Culturist II, Chuck Pratt, dips out Arctic char brood from a stocking truck to stock into Campbell Point Lake. Fish Culturist II, Chuck Pratt, stocks Arctic char brood through the ice. Fish Culturist I, Megan McClaren, stocks Chinook smolt into Deception Creek. Fish Technician II, Cody Block rinses Chinook salmon eggs after they were just fertilized. College Intern, Mike Komparda, holds the stocking hose in preparation for rainbow trout fingerling to be released into Summit Lake. Fish Technician, Frank Woitel, sorts male and female salmon for upcoming eggtake. Fish Culturist I, Kurt Schoephorster, sorts Chinook salmon for upcoming eggtake. Chinook salmon accumulate below the hatchery’s fish ladder in Ship Creek. Fish and Game employees and volunteers wait in anticipation for their empty backpacks to be loaded with rainbow trout fingerling. The group splits up to hike fish into several small lakes in the Kenai without motorized access. Fish and Game employees line up across Deception Creek to collect Chinook salmon for their eggtake. Fish Culturist, Megan McClaren, holds Chinook salmon eyed eggs in her hand. The live eggs are being sorted from dead eggs using a Jensorter Egg Picker. Greg Carpenter opens up a ripe Chinook salmon hen as Jim Novak holds a bucket to collect the eggs. College Intern, Jenna Fortier, uses both hands to hold up an impressive Chinook salmon during the Deception Creek eggtake. A group of Fish and Game employees work diligently to meet the deadline to clip adipose fins and insert coded wire tags into Chinook salmon. These salmon are coded for specific release locations. Fish Culturist II, Greg Carpenter, snaps a picture of the fish ladder and outdoor brood holding raceways while wading in Ship Creek. Fish are pumped through large hoses from inside the hatchery to the stocking trucks. Arctic grayling alevin continue to absorb their yolk while in the incubators. Arctic grayling fry swim in a small sampling bucket shortly after leaving their incubators. Hatchery personnel pose for a quick photo before backpacking rainbow trout fingerling into a lake without motorized access. Diane Loopstra checks on some eggs incubating in heath trays at the William Jack Hernandez Hatchery. The outdoor brood raceways at the William Jack Hernandez Hatchery hold returning adult salmon. Catchable rainbow trout are held in these 26 ft. tanks until they are released in the summer months. Chinook salmon fry grow in 10ft tanks in Start-up Rearing until they are ready to be transferred to the main production floor.
