Public Use and Access

Access to the sanctuary is authorized by advance permit between June 1 and September 10. During the peak viewing season (July 5 – August 25) permits are limited and require advance reservation. Access is by boat or plane via the South Sand Spit. Camping is not allowed on Admiralty Island near the sanctuary but is permitted on nearby Windfall Island, accessible by boat. The sanctuary has two viewing areas and a food cache. There are no facilities or concessionaires. Seasonal employees are on hand during the bear viewing season, and visitors are restricted to specific viewing times and areas. Fishing is prohibited during the viewing season.
