Subsistence in Alaska
Amounts Reasonably Necessary for Subsistence
Once the Board of Fisheries or Board of Game has determined that there are customary and traditional uses of a fish stock or game population, they must set the amount reasonably necessary for subsistence uses, keeping in mind the sustained yield principle. This is often referred to as the “ANS.”
The boards rely on harvest data provided by the divisions of Subsistence, Wildlife Conservation, Commercial Fisheries, and Sport Fish, as well as other data, to help guide them.
