Location

Western Kodiak Island, including the area east of Cape Karluk to the village of Larsen Bay, also includes Seven-mile beach and lower Karluk River. See area map (Image file 47 kB).

Topography and Habitat

Rolling hills to 2101'and bench lands intersected with numerous drainages, small ponds and lakes. Grass/salmonberry and tundra hummocks flats along the lower elevations with interspersed alder and willow thickets. The villages of Karluk (population 65) and Larsen Bay (population 153) are within this area and each has regular air service to Kodiak city.

Land Ownership

Primarily Koniag Inc. lands with some Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge lands in upland areas. There are also private inholdings along the coast.

Public Use Cabins

Cabins are available on the Karluk River at the Portage crossing.
